This is a complicated area. Our quotations will indicate whether or not VAT is applicable. Broadly speaking, if the item is of a promotional, informational or publicity nature (flyers, brochures, newsletters etc) the item will be zero rated; items that you write on do incur VAT; services (e.g. artwork and design) when itemised separately do attract VAT. As an example an A4 poster would carry VAT, but an A4 single-sided leaflet would not. Please check with us if you are unsure or visit this page on HMRC website for further information.
Answer 2
Some types of printing are subject to VAT dependent on the content of the artwork being printed on them. For example, a flyer is normally zero rated, however if the artwork being printed onto it contains a form, or could be deemed to be a voucher (e.g. bring this flyer with you and receive 10% off your meal) then the item becomes standard rated, and VAT will have to be charged on it.
All business stationary, posters, roller banners and exhibition stands are subject to VAT.
This is only a small snippet of the VAT rules for printed products for more information please see the following government website https://www.gov.uk/business-tax/vat
If you are sending us artwork with a mix of graphics and photography please provide us with a PDF (print ready) and if you are sending any Photography, please ensure it is as high resolution as possible.
If you are sending over an EPS, please ensure that all the fonts are outlined.
A Print ready PDF must meet certain criteria for your file to print without problems. All print ready PDFs need to contain the following:
- The file is supplied as four-colour process CMYK and not RGB colour space. If you are unfamiliar with this terminology don’t worry, we will convert it for you, though some colours may look washed out.
- The document’s page size is the finished trim size.
- Fonts are embedded or converted to outlines so no fonts are needed.
- All scans resolution are 300 dpi at 100% of the final image size.
- Images are embedded in the file.
- Files are supplied with 3mm bleed.
- Any trim, score or fold marks are indicated and outside the live print area.
- Artwork is at least 5mm from the edge of the page; this is regarded as a safe or quiet area.
- Black text is 100% black and not a mix of CMYK.
- White text is not set to overprint.
- Any multiple-page PDF consists of single pages running from the front cover through to the back cover, including blank pages if needed.
Modern versions of Microsoft can save files as PDF. Simply click File> Save As PDF.
If this is not an option we can recommend a free online tool that can convert your Word file free of charge www.zamzar.com.
Please ensure to check your PDF thoroughly before submitting to us.
RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue – the colours of light a computer screen mixes together to make colours on your screen.

When you cover a sheet of paper in plastic so that there is a lip going all the way around it, making the whole sheet water tight you are Encapsulating.
On the other hand when you put a very thin layer of plastic on which has no lip, it is Lamination. Lamination is not water tight because moisture can get into the paper through the unsealed edges. However because it is so thin it is used to give printing a high gloss on really matt finish, without making the paper thick to fold or score. Indeed the only way the untrained eye can recognise if a sheet of paper is laminated, is if they rip the corner of the sheet. Only that way can you see the layer of plastic.
- Capacity – do you want a single crease or a ‘capacity’ (gusset) crease to take more pages?
- Flaps – where? When open, do you want these left and right or just on the right?
- Flaps – how many? Do you want a flap just on the right or on the right and at the bottom?
- Extras – do you want slots to hold your business card? If so, is your business card a standard 85mm x 55mm or some other size?
- Finish: do you wish to laminate? Chose between matt, gloss, velvet and fabric effect lamination. These will give your folder and colours a longer life and a nice feel to the touch.
- Finish: do you want the item left flat (much smaller for storage and cheaper too) for you to make up as required, or would you like us to make them up?
